Sushi, Shushi and More Sushi!

food friday

Sushi is a very popular Japanese food, not only here but also abroad. Sushi, or vinegared rice is a Japanese cuisine that is usually topped with fish, vegetables, and various meats. Before, I mistook the sushi for the fish itself. Now, I know better. The raw fish alone is called sashimi.

And did you know that there are many types of sushi? They have got the makizushi which is sushi served rolled inside nori (pressed and dried layers of seaweed). They also have the nigirizushi which is sushi made with toppings laid with hand-formed clumps of rice. Then there's the inarizushi where the toppings are stuffed into a small pouch of fried tofu. And of course, there's chirashi-zushi where the toppings are served scattered over a bowl of sushi rice.

One time, we ate at a sushi train (kaiten zushi) restaurant where the sushi was served on small plates and the plates are placed on a conveyor belt so that as the belt passes, we just chose what we want to eat. Each plate, consisting of two pieces of sushi cost JPY105. After we had our fill of sushi, our bill was tallied by counting the number of plates that we have taken from the converyor. Guess how many plates we have eaten?
