TCP#29: My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Hello everyone! Welcome to the March 16th edition of Tuesday Couch Potatoes where we post about a movie each week. This week's theme is Wedding Movies. Let us all celebrate the beauty, excitement, joy, pressures and stress that go with wedding preparations and the ceremony itself this Tuesday. I just love wedding movies. I was on a wedding movie marathon when I was preparing for my wedding to get ideas and inspiration, and giggles and some thrill on the side. If you have got a wedding movie to share, why not share them with us this week?

I'll start off with my pick: My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a box office movie that is funny, endearing and just plain adorable. This 2002 romantic comedy film was written by and starring Nia Vardalos and John Corbett. The story is about Fotoula "Toula" Portokalos, a middle-class Greek American woman who is going through an early midlife crisis. At the age of 30, she is still single and available and is the only woman in the family who has "failed" to marry a Greek, have Greek babies and fee everyone until the day she dies. Stuck working in the family restaurant, she fears that she is doomed to be stuck with her life. Things changed when she met Ian Miller, a non-Greek upper middle-class school teacher who changed her outlook.

She left the restaurant, went back to school to learn computers and eventually worked at her aunt's travel agency. She also begins to take better care of her appearance, something that Ian noticed. They finally introduced themselves and began dating, something that Toula's family doesn't know about until one day when Gus, Toula's father, discovered the relationship. Gus is against the relationship because Ian is not Greek but when Ian proposed to Toula and she accepted, Gus had no choice but to accept Ian on the condition that he will embrace the Greek Orthodox faith and be baptized in the traditional way. He readily agrees and as the wedding preparation ensues, Toula is horrified that her father invited the entire family when the wedding was supposed to be a "quiet" wedding dinner.

I really enjoyed watching this movie.. It is filled with humor and reminds me of the awkwardness that comes with the meet the parents phase of the engagement. I can so totally relate with Toula's parents when they invited the entire family, perhaps even down to the distant relatives. I guess Greek weddings are in a way similar to Filipino weddings in that there is a need for a huge reception hall to accommodate everyone: family, friends, even gatecrashers. Hehe! I just love the fact the the groom loves the bride so much that he did everything just to be accepted into the family. I also liked Toula's parents wedding gift: a house. It would have been perfect if the house is not right next door to your parents. Lol!

Here's the movie trailer. Hope you have a good laugh and will hopefully watch it too:

Hi Kikamz, I'm glad to join in again this week after missing many themes; got something for you on my blog as well.

I've always put off buying the DVD of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I think I will in a few days. How keen the similarities are in this movie with pinoy wedding culture: invite the whole clan lol!

I enjoyed this movie too. Some aspects of it remind me of my life. Like, living right next door to my parent.
