TCP#42: Hackers

Hello Couchers! Welcome to the June 8th edition of Tuesday Couch Potatoes where we post about a movie each week. This week's theme is Computer Geeks 101 and as I have explained earlier, we will post any movie pertaining to computers and information technology. It could be about hacking, virtual terrorism, use of IT in solving crimes, or super computers ruling the society.

My pick for this week goes way back in the 90's when computers and the internet were a relatively new concept. It is the film entitled Hackers which was released in 1995 and starred Angelina Jolie, Jonny Lee Miller, Renoly Santiago and Matthew Lillard.

A young boy is arrested by the US Secret Service for writing a computer virus and is banned from using a computer until his 18th birthday. Years later, he and his new-found friends discover a plot to unleash a dangerous computer virus, but they must use their computer skills to find the evidence while being pursued by the Secret Service and the evil computer genius behind the virus. Written by Alexander Lum

I enjoyed this film back then because it made computers all the more interesting and I didn't take all the computer stuff seriously as they all sound too "Latin" for me. I also find their aliases interesting: Crash Override, Acid Burn, The Plague, Cereal Killer. But when I watched it again a year ago, I found that the plot was very shallow and very predictable... it was just a fast-paced movie with lots of visual effects and with loud music.

If you still haven't seen the film though, it is worth a look. It's a rather entertaining film.
